July 15, 2024 – Grand Rapids’ Gerald R. Ford International Airport recently completed a major remodel and expansion of its Concourse A. In creating the renovation plan, the design and architectural teams included high-end amenities and furnishings to optimize any traveler’s experience.
Research showed that the airport sees a balance between those travelling for work and those taking leisure trips. Because these two types of travelers use airport spaces differently, the design team was challenged with considering the “whole room” to ensure the new layout worked for all types of travelers.
Business travelers gravitate toward the Maari stools around bar-height Cultivate powered tables to charge devices and work while waiting for a flight. Durably upholstered swiveling Orla chairs provide a comfortable option for leisure and infrequent travelers to relax while staying near their gate.
The airport renovations highlight a distinctive mix of natural beauty and urban vibrancy that make West Michigan a unique destination. Lake water blues, brown sand tones, forest greens and bright colors fuse, moving travelers from the lakeshore through woods and farmlands and into the city. At the end of the concourse, an art installation features a large etched map of Michigan on the glass with clear orb lights representing regional destinations; a single blue light symbolizes Grand Rapids. This project was led by Haworth’s dealer partner, Interphase Interiors, and designed by Mead and Hunt.
