Welcome to Workplace 2035
A speculative look at the future of the workplace by Haworth Ideation’s Nishtha Bali
This preview of the future is one of many visions of tomorrow’s workplace. What do you think the office will look like in the decades to come? Send your thoughts to alex.przybyla@haworth.com for a chance to be published in a future article.
Welcome to Workplace 2035…
…a place where distractions are extinct, meetings are mythical, and your robot colleague knows how you take your coffee. It’s not science fiction. It’s the future of work, and it’s surprisingly... human!
You Work in the Age of Focus.
Remember 2025? When your attention span was shorter than a TikTok video and your office felt like a circus of pings, pongs, and pointless pings again? Fast forward to 2035, and FOCUS is back in fashion. Offices now feature “flow zones” – low-tech cocoons with zero notifications, no phones, and ambient soundtracks that whisper, “You’ve got this.”
Want to go offline and actually get something done? You can. But only if YOU want to. Because…
Autonomy Is the New Boss.
In 2035, you’re the boss of YOU. No more managers scheduling “alignment syncs” to discuss “synergies.” (Translation: no more meetings that could’ve been a nap.) You decide what you do, when, where, and how. The only requirement is that you’ve got to actually do something. If you can’t create, build, or contribute meaningfully, well… “ROBin” might be more productive than you.
Meet ROBin, Your AI Colleague.
ROBin is your AI-powered office buddy. It brings your morning coffee, tidies up your desk, and even arrange your family photos on your desk for the day. But ROBin doesn’t stop there. While you were getting your 8 hours of beauty sleep, ROBin was already working – drafting your emails, setting your one (yes, just one!) meeting, and organizing your day based on company priorities.
Basically, ROBin is the colleague who never forgets, never complains, and never steals your lunch.
Wait, So What Do You Do?

If AI is doing all the admin, what’s left for you? The good stuff. The human stuff. Creativity, empathy, problem-solving, and making the world a little more liveable. AI writes the code. You design the future. You’re prototyping, testing, improving. Your work is Hands On and you’re doing more with less in a world where resources are tight and innovation is survival.
We Live in a Shortage Economy.
In 2035, space and stuff are scarce. Offices are smaller, smarter, and double as restaurants or nightclubs after hours. (Don’t worry – ROBin cleans up before you arrive.) Cars? A thing of the past.
You ride in autonomous pods that pick up half the city on the way. And ROBin? It also does your laundry, groceries, dishes, and even makes your bed.
So what do you do with all that free time? You create. You parent. You partner. You live. Connection has new meaning. Work is something you enjoy. It is no longer about hustle. Work is human. In a world where technology handles the noise, you can focus on what really matters. It’s not just a better way to work. It’s a better way to be.
