With its new perspective on Southeast Asian handicraft, the Lukis armchair is an encounter between centuries-old tradition of rattan processing and contemporary design. While rattan defines the seat and backrest, the base is made from rubber wood. Lukis is handmade with such accuracy that you would think it’s a highly technical industrial product.
I have a strong passion to explore my designs using rattan material started from my college years and still working with it ever since. The reason why I chose rattan is because rattan is actually a material that originally from Indonesia, where more than 80% of the worldwide needs are from the country own resources. But yet, despite all the prospects, unfortunately our rattan industries here are facing significant challenges. Due to the lack of interest by the consumers to use rattan furniture that partly caused by the consideration that rattan material is a classic material and there were lack of furniture design developments using rattan for the past few decades as well. Considering the situations, I try to create some contemporary look of rattan designs, to give options and attract people to know more about the material and any possible explorations and applications, and hopefully could make them choose rattan furnitures to be putted on their houses and thus, make our rattan industry here revived again.
