“In theory, design is a keen awareness of our collective surroundings - a nagging curiosity which is molded into a series of questions…Then ‘poof’ beautifully elegant solutions transpire which fulfill the needs of the user. In practice, when dealing with highly integrated objects for the masses, we designers work within so many constraints, both human and inhuman…most abstract and intangible, some still nostalgic and physical, and yet others long and clinical and dry as gravel.  Therefore, it must be part of an enduring design process that we spend our waking hours sharing our dreams and encouraging our collaborators to persist with humor and dignity.”

Dan joined Haworth in 1993. His responsibilities as Principal Designer include the design and development of freestanding products such as tables, storage and ancillary pieces for a full range of programs from initial concept exploration to production. His design program management role often involves coordination and collaboration with a diverse array of internal and external creative partners from all over the globe.

West has over 18 years of industry experience including work at Steelcase and Izzy Design. His varied design background includes custom furniture, fixtures, graphic and exhibit design.

He has designed and developed many award winning and patented products for Haworth and other manufacturers. His professional awards and honors date back to the mid 90’s and recently include the following:
• NeoCon Gold for Planes Height Adjustable Tables 2009
• NeoCon Gold for Planes Collection 2007

West has a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in industrial design (1991) from the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI.
