HAWORTH RECEIVES LEED GOLD CERTIFICATIONS & EPA ENERGY STAR
HOLLAND, MI – August 11, 2010 – Haworth’s global headquarters and the San Francisco and New York City showrooms recently achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The headquarters also earned the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR®.
Haworth’s global headquarters in Holland, Michigan achieved LEED Gold certification for a total renovation project of 300,000 sq. feet. Designed by Perkins + Will, the building has a three-story, 35,000 sq. ft. glass atrium and a 45,000 sq. ft. green roof. Although the building size increased by 20 percent, overall energy usage decreased by 10 percent. The Haworth HQ project also represents the first time carbon credits from a renewable energy project were used to achieve green power credits for LEED Gold certification instead of renewable energy credits. Haworth purchased the high quality carbon credits from The CarbonNeutral Company, a world-leading carbon offset and carbon management business.
During the Haworth global headquarters renovation, Haworth recycled over 98 percent of the old building. This success was achieved through the combined efforts of Haworth and Turner Construction Company. The process included reusing concrete floors and steel beams, using concrete waste dust from Haworth manufacturing and window glass to make new concrete construction block, donating materials to local schools and down-cycling debris for aggregate used in road-bed construction.
Haworth’s San Francisco showroom is located at 555 Mission Street and spans over 8,300 square feet on the 19th floor of San Francisco’s first LEED-Gold certified speculative high rise development. The building is located in an area of redevelopment, green building practices and easy access to many of the area’s transit lines. Also designed by Perkins + Will and built with Turner Construction Company, the dramatic space with floor-to-ceiling windows allows light to permeate the space. The showroom entrance is defined by ceiling lattice of reclaimed wood, a beautiful, sustainable architectural detail reflective of Haworth’s heritage.
Haworth’s New York showroom is located in the heart of Manhattan, at 42nd Street and Park Avenue and directly opposite Grand Central Terminal. The New York showroom immerses clients in a world-class experience with several areas of special focus: sustainability lab, global seating gallery, wood salon and global collaborative resources. Also built in partnership with Perkins +Will | Eva Maddox Branded Environments and Turner Construction, the New York showroom is one of the few LEED-CI Gold spaces in the city.
Haworth’s global headquarters also earned EPA’s ENERGY STAR® - the national symbol for protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency. EPA’s ENERGY STAR performance scale helps organizations assess how efficiently their buildings use energy relative to similar buildings nationwide. The Haworth global headquarters ranked amongst the top 5 percent of energy efficient office buildings in the nation.
With the addition of these certifications, Haworth has 7 LEED Gold spaces in North America. Globally, Haworth has two international LEED certified spaces- the company’s showrooms in Shanghai, China and Pune, India.
